Drug Company Teva Breaks Ground For NE Philadelphia Distribution Center

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The international pharmaceutical giant Teva has announced plans to build a huge distribution center in Northeast Philadelphia.

There were smiles all around at the groundbreaking ceremony today on the site of an old golf course just off Red Lion Road.

Mayor Nutter says he is happy because of the 400 permanent jobs that will eventually be created.

"This is the biggest economic development project of our administration. We could not be more excited," he said.

Teva president and CEO William Marth says the $300-million project will also generate about three thousand construction jobs.

"This new, state-of-the-art building will help support us in our mission to bring quality medicine to people around the world," he said.  "When completed, this building will consist of three adjoining buildings measuring 1.1 million square feet. That is huge."

They hope to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony in mid-2013.
