DRPA Bails On Camden-Glassboro Light Rail Project
CAMDEN (CBS) - The future of a light rail commuter line from Camden into Gloucester County is very much in doubt, with a decision by the Delaware River Port Authority to suspend its' long term interest in the billion dollar project.
The agency will continue with a planned Environmental Impact Study of the plan, costing some $9-million with a promise from New Jersey Transit to be reimbursed once the Transportation Trust Fund gets some money in it again.
But plans to actually build the 18 mile line linking Camden with Woodbury and Glassboro are being abandoned, for now, according to DRPA CEO John Matheussen:
"It doesn't seem to be, at this point in time -- number one -- the kind of technology that PATCO would use but also just as importantly, funding for it is not something that DRPA would have at this point in time to be able to go beyond this EIS study."
Not to say they might not revisit the issue, but Matheussen suggests the project would be a much better fit for NJT since they already have a light rail line between Camden and Trenton.
