Drexel University Hosts All-Girls Chess Tournament
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Girls in kindergarten all the way up to high school were at Drexel University on Tuesday to play a game they love: Chess.
Typically, a male-dominated sport, over 100 girls came out to show off their skills at the girls-only tournament. The tournament is a part of the school's involvement with the After School Activities Partnerships (ASAP) which coordinates weekly after school clubs for students to attend in schools, libraries, and rec. centers around Philly.
"Teachers see it right away," said Martin Collette, director of the ASAP Chess Program which has more than 200 chess clubs throughout the city for girls and boys. "They see that their kids are able to pay attention a little bit closer and they think things through a little more and that's all because of the critical thinking skills that they develop playing chess as well as the ability to focus."
Chess club is always looking for new members. They're currently recruiting for the first annual Philly Girls Summer Chess Camp which starts in August.
