Drexel Hosts National Network Of Hospital Based Violence Intervention Programs

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The 4th annual conference for the National Network of Hospital Based Violence Intervention Programs was held at Drexel University.
It's the first time the conference was held in Philadelphia.
"Philadelphia is rampant with violence," says Dr. Ted Corbin, co-chair of the event. "And it's something that's happening in so many cities."
Corbin says the goal of the conference is to address how to intervene in violence.
"We look through our cadre of colleagues," he says. "And bring in speakers who really speak to the issue of interpersonal injury and how trauma has impacted their lives."
Among the speakers was Major League Baseball executive Joe Torre.
"To me, it's so appalling to have children find violence outside their front door," Torre says. "But to have violence inside your front door is devastating to me."
Torre speaks from experience.
"I mean I grew up, my dad abused my mom," he says. "I never saw him hit her, but I saw the results of it and I heard him throw dishes against the wall."
Torre spoke of his anti-violence foundation called Safe Haven, in which issues of violence are addressed at schools across the country.
