Drawing Instructor Says Delighting In Small Things Will Help Creativity

By John Ostapkovich

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Marshalling creativity may be more art than science, especially where a Seattle drawing instructor is concerned.

Carla Sonheim, hoping to get both children and adults to open up to drawing, created a worksheet based on one premise: everyone is in third grade.

"Delight in the small things; not coming at everything with a huge amount of judgment or pre-existing ideas of what things should be, but just let things be as they are. If you can do this in a drawing way, you can also carry this over in a life way and it's a good thing," Sonheim explains.

The worksheet eventually became a work book called The Art of Silliness, a series of drawing exercises designed to get you to think outside the lines.
One trick is to draw with your off hand, which engages new parts of the brain.

Voila, creativity! Although, if your off-hand drawing looks anything like mine, you'd just have to take my word for it.
