Drawing Attention To Women's Heart Health, Tomorrow Is National Wear Red Day

By John Ostapkovich

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Winter may look a little more colorful tomorrow but it's for a serious cause.

February 1st is the tenth National Wear Red Day, when red clothing is used to draw attention not only to the wearer but women's heart health.

"Any type of red is appropriate because any type of red shows you're thinking about this and that's really what we want," says Cardiologist Erin O'Malley Tysko. "We want women to think about it and become involved and more proactive in their health."

Dr. O'Malley Tysko says heart ailments are the biggest threat to women's lives. "We always thought of heart disease as a man's disease, but that really is not true. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women in the United States and it causes about one in three deaths each year. Heart disease is a killer of more women than the next three forms of death combined including all forms of cancer."

Dr. O'Malley Tysko says women should know their numbers, cholesterol, and blood sugar and pressure, stop smoking and check family history for heart disease. She says Go Red has made a big impact, reducing women's heart-related deaths but clearly there's a long way to go.
