'Lorax' Knocks Off Navy SEALS At Box Office
By Bill Wine
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Boy, did Dr. Seuss have the box-office juice.
The animated feature, Dr. Seuss' The Lorax, with a voice cast led by Zac Efron and Danny DeVito, ran away to a first-place finish on its debut weekend, earning an estimated and surprising $71-million.
Second place belonged to another new attraction, Project X, the found-footage teen party romp. It took in $21-million in its first weekend.
Last weekend's leader -- the Navy SEALS thriller, Act of Valor -- placed third with $14-million.
No other title -- new or old -- came anywhere near the $10-million mark.
Overall, it was another in a string of strong 2012 weekends, with industry-wide totals well ahead of last year's pace.
