Dozens Of Sailboats Take To The Delaware River For Philadelphia Cup Regatta
By Hadas Kuznits
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It was a beautiful day to be outside Saturday, but those participating in the Philadelphia Cup Regatta were hoping for windier conditions.
About 70 sailboats dotted the Delaware River as part of the Regatta.
"The Philadelphia Cup probably goes back about 30 years," says Regatta chairman Roel Hoekstra. "It took a ten year hiatus and we restarted it with the Seaport Museum as a co-sponsor four years ago."
During this year's event, the sailboats were moving very slowly.
"The hardest thing about Center City Philadelphia is there's a lot of current on the Delaware River," Hoekstra says, "and without wind -- it's really hard for the sailboats to move faster than the current."
Hoekstra says sailors race three different courses as many times as they can. This year, though, he doesn't anticipate sailors taking multiple laps.
"It should normally take about a half-hour for a race," he says. "Today, it may take a lot longer."
