Dozens Head To Center City To Honor Former Philadelphia Mayor Frank Rizzo
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Dozens stood in the hot sun Saturday in Center City to honor the late Philadelphia mayor Frank Rizzo. It's been 20 years since the iconic mayor died of a heart attack at his campaign headquarters.
At the statue of him outside the Municipal Services building, friends, family and colleagues gathered to remember Rizzo - a man who many say left a legacy of courage, honor and integrity.
Among those who spoke was Rizzo's son, City Councilman Frank Rizzo Jr.
"It amazes me that after 20 years after my dad's death that all of you still remember him."
And remember the contributions he made to the city. Oscar Vance is the chief of the Montgomery County Detectives Bureau.
"Frank was also an individual who was on the cutting edge of community policing. Back then, you didn't hear the word community policing, but he was already involved in community policing in terms of bringing the citizens and the police together."
There was also a mass in Rizzo's honor at St. Monica's Catholic Church in South Philadelphia.
