Dozens of Residents Attend National Night Out In South Philadelphia

By Dan Wing

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Dozens of residents of South Philadelphia met at the Sacks Recreation Center and Playground Monday night for the annual South Philadelphia National Night Out and Kick Off Rally celebration.

The beautiful weather drew a big crowd as people played a game of basketball, chatted with local businesses and organizations, and checked out a number of performances on the stage.

Carmetta Dickerson with Town Watch Integrated Services helped organize the event, which she says helps combat crime by building community.

"We promote neighbors working with neighbors, working with the resources within your community as well," said Dickerson.  "You'll be surprised that neighbors don't know the neighbors to the right, to the left, the front, the back. If you have any of those areas that are not covered, chances are you're susceptible to crime."

Dickerson says police districts will be holding events throughout the week as part of National Night Out.

Dickerson invites anyone interested in getting involved to visit www.townwatch.net.
