Dozens Flock To Explore The Delaware River

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Dozens of people in kayaks and canoes are exploring the Delaware river this week as part of a scenic sojourn that will bring them to Philadelphia by Friday.
Kate Schmidt of the Delaware River Basin Commission says the week-long Delaware River journey began over the weekend in the upper part of the river at the New York border.
She says dozens of paddlers are along for the trek.
"The sojourn's main purpose is to get people onto the river and experience it first-hand. And, through that, we aim to promote stewardship of the river, the watershed and its resources," Schmidt says.
Schmidt says each day's tour of sections of the river draws all kinds of folks, "we have some local residents who live along the river on various points, we have some people paddling that are coming in from Virginia. I think our furthest people that are coming in this year are coming from New Mexico."
Schmidt says the paddlers will put in at the Independence Seaport Museum Friday, stay overnight there, and then finish the trip Saturday with a paddle that takes them to Gloucester City and Camden.
