Teen Dies, 2 Hospitalized Following Shooting In Overbrook
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Philadelphia Police say a 17-year-old male has died at the hospital following a shooting near Overbrook High School on Thursday afternoon.
Another 17-year-old male remains in critical but stable condition. Police say both teens were innocent bystanders.
A third shooting victim, a 19-year old male, also remains hospitalized. Police believe he was one of the shooters.
The incident happened at about 3:45 p.m. at a playground located near 59th Street and Lancaster Avenue.
Fernando Gallard, of the Philadelphia School District, confirms the Overbrook High School baseball team was on the field when the shootout occurred.
As the baseball team was practicing, Southwest Detectives Lieutenant John Walker says a separate group of young men nearby got into it.
"It started as a fistfight, at which point we know two males pulled guns," said Walker. "There's a shootout between two males."
A 17-year-old male was shot in the chest and forearm. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition, but later died from his injuries.
A second 17-year-old male was shot in the buttocks. He was transported to the hospital and is listed in critical but stable condition.
A few blocks away, police found a 19-year-old man with a gunshot wound. Police believe he was one of the shooters.
Walker also says another gunman is in custody and witnesses were a great help to police.
"We had a lot of people cooperating out here and the officers did a great job from the 19th district rounding people up and getting people running from the scene."
Overbrook High School was placed on lockdown for about 90 minutes due to the shooting.
There is no word on what caused the fight.
