Don't Feed The Wild Animals, An Ocean City Restaurant Tells Its Customers

By David Madden

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (CBS) -- Here's something you probably don't expect to see near the Ocean City boardwalk: a red fox.  Yet they seem to be congregating near one eatery on the north end of town.

If you've ever had a burger plucked from your hand by a seagull, you might understand the concern here.  But outside Browns Restaurant, red foxes are said to be getting hand fed by passersby.

Co-owner Melissa Brown has put a couple of signs up to discourage that.

"People are saying it's our customers feeding them doughnuts," she told KYW Newsradio this morning.  "I think it's more tourists feeding them whatever they want to feed them."

But the furry creatures aren't constantly there.  Brown says she hasn't seen one in the past three days.

But, she notes, it really isn't that big a deal.  They've been on the island for years. There are just more of them these days, and they don't seem to be afraid of people.

Still, officials warn, foxes are wild animals and should be treated accordingly.
