Donovan McNabb Says Chip Kelly's Offense Is A Fad

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Chip Kelly has only been a head coach in the NFL for two games, but Donvovan McNabb has seen enough.
"To me, it's just a fad," McNabb said of the read-option and Kelly's offense to Ruben Frank of 94WIP and Comcast Sportsnet.
Though Kelly's offense does have the read-option as part of it, it isn't exclusively that formation, as the Eagles have shown in their first two games.
But it isn't only the formation that McNabb questions, it's the speed.
"I enjoyed the West Coast offense, I enjoyed the no-huddle and two-minute drill we ran, but I'm not trying to run 90 plays in a game," McNabb said.
"I don't know if any offensive player would want to run 90 plays in a game. If you're running 90 plays in a game, that means your defense is pretty awful and you're running entirely too many plays."
The Eagles offensive players have given positive reviews of Kelly's offense so far, with LeSean McCoy, Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson all off to career best starts. McCoy leads the league in rushing, Vick is third in QB rating, and Jackson leads the league in receiving yards. Time will tell how their bodies hold up, but if the first two games are any indication, it would seem unlikely they'll have too much problem with it.
"At Oregon, [Kelly] may have ran 75 plays in a game, but you're not going to run 85, 90, not in the NFL, and teams and defensive coordinators are a lot better than what you're going to see in college."
Thankfully for McNabb, he'll be on the field to be honored on Thursday night, and not to have to run too many plays.
