Donors Come Through For Championship- Bound Olney Eagles Youth Football Team
By Cherri Gregg
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The undefeated Olney Eagles are packing up today and heading to Florida for the United Youth Football League championship.
The group raised nearly $20,000 in two weeks for their trip, after their plight was highlighted on KYW Newsradio.
(Gregg:) "How do you feel now?"
(Robinson:) "It's awesome, because we really didn't have any other way to get there."
Orben Robinson is an assistant coach for the 10-0 Olney Eagles. Two weeks ago they had only $800 in their trip fund.
But once the word got out on radio and TV -- "KYW, of course, and the CW" -- the money began trickling in.
"We just started getting people reaching out to us and I was, like, okay, this is going to happen," Robinson tells KYW Newsradio.
The team raised $20,000 through more than 50 donations over the course of 23 days, with the biggest donations coming from TD Bank and the Philadelphia Eagles. But Robinson says everyday people really came through, too.
"The smaller donations helped make up the majority of the donations -- I can't say thank you enough," he says.
The Olney Eagles will head down to Florida by bus this evening. Their first kickoff is Sunday.
