Police: Recently Released Convicted Murderer Accused Of Carjacking Woman At Gunpoint In Ridley Township
RIDLEY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) -- A wild carjacking triggered a manhunt in Delaware County. Police say a recently released convicted murderer carjacked a woman at gunpoint in Ridley Township.
The suspect is Donald Flynn, a convicted murderer who spent decades behind bars. He was released a few months ago and now people who live in Ridley Township want to know why.
A BMW crashed into a concrete barrier before two people are seen running for their lives. It happened during -- or after -- a carjacking Monday night on the 200 block of Elmwood Avenue in Ridley Township.
The suspect was seen getting into the BMW and taking off, but he didn't get too far.
Police say the suspect set fire to the car then ran from the scene on nearby Taylor Avenue.
"There was just a car there in flames," one neighbor said.
Some neighbors heard an explosion and rushed to the burning car. Others called 911.
"Cops were all over," a neighbor said.
One neighbor saw the suspect and gave police his description. She didn't want to be identified.
"I was like, 'He's running toward Mildred. He's in black, all dressed in black,'" the woman said.
Ridley Township police quickly caught the ex-con and identified him as 44-year-old Flynn.
He told officers the burns on his hands and neck were caused by his phone exploding, but cops didn't buy the story.
Flynn is back behind bars after previously serving 24 years for second-degree murder. He was released in August.
The Delaware County District Attorney's Office says Flynn was released because the murder was committed when Flynn was a minor.
"I think he's an idiot. He just came home. What are you doing? At least he's caught, he's not going to be on the street," neighbor Rachel Phillips said.
Authorities say that, if convicted of the new crimes, Flynn could spend a minimum of 10 years behind bars.
