Dom Giordano Talks To La Salle Brother About Procrastination

By Dom Giordano

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Brother Arthur Bangs from La Salle University addressed the issue of procrastination, especially regarding things like filing taxes or completing school work.

Bangs told Dom Giordano on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT that one of the main reasons for delaying a task is fear of failure.

"One reason why people put it off, because they feel it's safe, I can't make a mistake if I don't try it...If I'm not sure how to do something, then, quite often, I wont take time out to figure out how do I do it, so I just put it off because I don't want to be challenged."

He said getting something wrong is not a valid reason not to make an attempt.

"Who is a perfectionist? Who does everything completely perfect anyway? Hidden behind that is the idea that it's safer to do nothing or there's a fear of not doing well. I can't be judged that I'm doing wrong if I don't do it. I can put it off. I made no mistake. I didn't try it."

Bangs said he mostly confronts this issue with students who don't plan their time appropriately.

"The person who doesn't do the job at all, that doesn't even get started would be the worst...That would be students. The students know that this counts toward their final grade, so they put it off and either they don't know how to do it or they fear they don't know how to do it well. So, why face the music?"
