Dom Giordano Speaks To Soldier Who Served With Bowe Bergdahl
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Dom Giordano spoke with Joey Cox, a former Army Specialist who served with prisoner of war Bowe Bergdahl, who was just exchanged for five members of the Taliban who were being held in Guantanamo Bay.
Former Army Specialist On Release Of Bergdahl
Cox stated that the soldiers in Bergdahl's unit believe he had left his post voluntarily, not as a result of being captured.
"When everything came down saying that he had just walked off the base, a lot of guys were angry. We all kind of felt like, okay, well if you're going to walk off the base in the middle of the night, then why are we spending millions of [tax dollars] to look for you?" he said.
He insisted that Bergdahl's conduct impaired the objectives of the military's mission.
"When the Taliban captured Bowe, they were able to then take the offensive instead of staying on the defensive. The military's best element is the element of surprise, and we no longer had that," he said.
Cox commented that those soldiers directly involved in the search for Bergdahl are not happy with the outcome of his case.
"Everybody is angry, and they have the right to be. The big consensus is, we lost six men looking for this guy and several others from various units were wounded as well, or killed in action looking for this man. I don't think there is a particular emotion that can describe the feelings that are going through everybody right now, especially the guys that are directly connected to this," he said.
