Beached Dolphin Dies In Stone Harbor
STONE HARBOR, N.J. (CBS) -- A beached dolphin that washed ashore Tuesday morning in Stone Harbor has died.
A jogger discovered the five foot long dolphin on the beach near 85th Street and First Avenue. Despite the efforts of a police officer and a volunteer from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, the animal died 90 minutes later.
Stranding Center director Bob Schoelkopf says this is the eighth dolphin to wash up on the New Jersey coastline within the last two months and it is the eleventh since March.
"That's a common number. I think last year we had seven and the year before that we had ten, so it's not uncommon," said Schoelkopf.
Nor is he concerned about any possible health problems. This is the time of year dolphins typically migrate to warmer waters in the south and as their numbers increase, so do the numbers of those that get sick and die.
