Doctor Writes Book On 'Diabesity'
By John Ostapkovich
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- More and more of us are being diagnosed as obese or with diabetes, and a new book argues they are on the same spectrum of disease.
"Anywhere on the continuum from mild overweight and blood sugar problems, all the way to full-blown diabetes, you get severe complications and problems, and that's why I call it 'diabesity,'" says Dr. Mark Hyman.
In his new book The Blood Sugar Solution, Hyman provides a comprehensive way to gauge your risks and do something to lower them. He says this is a problem of epidemic proportions that's largely undiagnosed, and one of the key treatments is what you put on your plate. Out with packaged, and in with fresh and home-cooked, says Dr. Hyman, and don't complain you're too busy.
"It kills me that Americans say they don't have time to cook, and it's too much work, but Americans spend more time watching cooking on TV than actually cooking," Dr. Hyman says.
