PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A 79-year-old Philadelphia doctor has been sentenced to prison for dealing drugs. Authorities say he wrote tens of thousands of sham prescriptions for frequently abused drugs.
Defendant Lewis Jacobs has been sentenced to five years in prison. Prosecutor Alex Nguyen says the 79 year old defendant used his physician's license to deal drugs.
"He was dealing to various drug dealers. There was an office assistant who was paid in prescriptions, and there's also a paramour who was given prescriptions as well."
According to the prosecutor, Jacobs wrote the sham prescriptions for Percocet, Xanax, gallons of addictive cough syrup and other drugs for $50 apiece and he took in over a million dollars from the illegal operation.
