Facebook Sets Up Shop At DNC
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Social media now plays a key role in the election process -- and the world's largest social network is Philadelphia for the Democratic National Convention.
Katie Harbath manages Global Elections for Facebook. She says for this election, Facebook is the new town hall.
"It's the place where people are wanting to talk about the candidates and the issues," Harbath said. "Since January 1, there has been over 89-million people in the U.S. having over 2.9-billion interactions on Facebook. That's likes, posts, comments, and shares about the candidates and the issues"
The social network has taken over a large area on the main concourse that they're calling "Facebook Central."
"We wanted to be here in Philly," Harbath said. "We were in Cleveland, too, helping people go live to share their experiences here at the convention on Facebook, and just give them a place to hang out, take a cool picture in the mini oval office, and try Oculus, our virtual reality company."
You can see the conversations happening on Facebook on a smart board. Some of the top issues over the last 30 days are those about crime, government ethics, and homeland security.
