Digging Underway At Site Of New High-Rise Luxury Apartment Building In Center City

By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It used to be a parking lot, but now digging is underway at the site of a future luxury high-rise apartment building near 12th and Walnut streets in Center City.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Tuesday.

1213 Walnut is the address and the name of the planned 26-story, 322 unit residential rental tower with an anticipated completion date of September 2017.

Seth Shapiro is with The Goldenberg Group, one of the partners in the project.

"If you look around there's fabulous restaurants and fabulous places to shop and there are lots places to live, but almost all of the places here are retrofitted old buildings and as you look at the way the millennials and other folks were moving into the city are trying to live, they are looking for a different sort of lifestyle than Philly has had in the past and this will be the first ground up, class A apartment building in this neighborhood and we think it's going to offer a whole new way of living," said Shapiro.

Amenities planned include an outdoor terrace lounge overlooking Walnut Street, an indoor-outdoor fitness center, an elevated private dog park and bicycle storage with a shop where you can make repairs.

The Goldenberg Group of Philadelphia, international real estate firm Hines, and ASB Real Estate Investments are partnering for the first time to create this project.
