Diabetic Diet May Benefit All Of Us
By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It is not a well known fact, but it should be. There are 180,000 Americans who have diabetes and kidney disease. Many of these people are on dialysis and some are on the transplant list.
The biggest step to prevent kidney problems for diabetics is to maintain good control of the blood sugar, but there are things you can do in addition to this. In fact, this is good advice for everyone - much can be done with a good diet.
Aim for three to five servings of vegetables per day. If you are looking for the ones best for you, try the ones with bright colors like orange carrots and green peppers.
Another good idea is to eat more fruit while cutting back on starches.
Finally choose whole grains. Some good ideas are whole wheat crackers, bread and brown rice.
