DHS Releases Statement About Abandoned 'Baby Noel'
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Philadelphia's DHS has released a statement about baby Noel (see previous story) in response to the outpouring of support for the little girl, who was found abandoned in a cardboard box in North Philadelphia on Wednesday.
While the statement thanks the local community for expressing an interest in adopting Noel or making donations to her, it also reads in part:
"While baby girl Noel has definitely captured the hearts of many during this Holiday season, we want to make it known that there are many other children who are in need of loving homes. For DHS, this case highlights the great need for Foster and Adoptive parents."
The release also recommends that those interested in becoming foster parents or adopting a child call the Statewide Adoption Network (SWAN) at 1-800-585-SWAN, or visit their website at www.adoptpakids.org.
DHS also says that while they will accept donations, they cannot ensure that they will all go to Noel, as there are many other children in the area who are in need.
In the meantime, Baby Noel will probably remain in the hospital for a few more days. Philadelphia police continue to search for her mother (see related story).
