DHS Head: 'Lessons To Be Learned' From Khalil Wimes Case
By Mike Dunn
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The head of Philadelphia's Department of Human Services says there are "lessons to be learned" from the death in March of 6-year-old Khalil Wimes. The boy's parents have been charged.
Anne Marie Ambrose, Commissioner of the Department of Human Services, was testifying at a city council budget hearing when one lawmaker asked about the Khalil Wimes case.
Ambrose cautioned that she can't comment on facts of the case. But, she said the independent Child Welfare Review panel had reviewed the matter on April 20 and now has 90 days to issue recommendations.
"And so I think there are some lessons to be learned. Although, I will say this case is very different in many ways from Danieal Kelly case."
Ambrose was referring to the 14-year-old who died of starvation in 2006, whose death later spurred sweeping changes within DHS. Ambrose promised that this review of Khalil Wimes will again dig deep into the performance of the agency.
