Despite String Of Attacks, It's Still Christmas In Kensington
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Philadelphia police continue to hunt for a strangler preying on women in a crime-ridden part of Kensington Avenue but that hasn't kept people away from the area.
"This is where everything happens; this is where everybody gives out the sample, the free drugs." Tony explained why neither the strangler, nor the cold, nor Christmas keeps people off the corner of Kensington and Somerset.
He says it's a certain kind of desperation, "but this life is no good. It's not good. All of it is misery."
But, befitting the holiday, even amidst the misery, there were signs of redemption. A group of friends was giving out warm clothes while a church group was serving hot food, and a message:
"We want these people to know they don't have to stay in this situation so we try to help them along the way and just say, hey listen, if you make the right decisions you don't have to stay here, you can come out of this lifestyle."
Still that message is a hard sell in this part of Kensington.
