Despite Orchestra Bankruptcy, Nero's Philly Pops Will Return For Fall/Winter Season
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - In the midst of the bankruptcy of the Philadelphia Orchestra, supporters of Peter Nero and the Philly Pops will be relieved to know that management is working to repair its relationship with Nero. There were concerns it was going to cancel the Pops for next season.
Attorney Paul Rosen and his law firm colleagues have complained that Orchestra management was kicking Nero to the curb, by not scheduling next season's Pops' concerts. The gripe was that all 96 Orchestra concerts were scheduled for next season, but none for the Pops.
Earlier this week, they reached an agreement to have Nero and the Pops finish this season's run, with four concerts this month, starting Sunday. Now, Rosen says they're hoping to put inserts in those programs to let folks know Nero and the Pops will return for a slightly abbreviated 2011-2012 season.
He says the bankruptcy distraction has wiped out September's performances, and they'll cut back on the number of holiday concerts.
"We're anticipating a full complement of the balance of the season."
Mr. Nero, the founding Music Director of the Pops in 1979, is the force behind programming all of its concerts, mixing musical genres that include classical, jazz and Broadway.
