Delays Expected As Project Begins On Major Mt. Airy Road

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Motorists who use a heavily-traveled stretch of Cresheim Valley Drive in Mt. Airy may face at least some off-peak delays as Monday marks the beginning of a six-month repair project.
This section of Cresheim Valley Road just below Germantown Avenue had to be closed for months back in 2004 for emergency repairs after flood damage.
Some pro-active repair work on that stretch to reduce the risk of further problems is set to begin.
"This project really takes those repairs one step further, to reduce the risk of wash-outs from future severe storms," Chief Construction Engineer William Gural said.
Lanes in each direction will remain open during rush hours. It'll be just a single lane between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. with crews using signals to alternate the direction getting through.
"We believe that the delays and the impacts are going to be minimal," Gural said.
The repairs include a resurfacing of the road, new curbs and guard rails, and improvements to drainage.
Gural expects completion by year's end.
