Delaware Women Charged With Murder Of Two Young Children, Including Infant

MILLSBORO, D.E., (CBS) -- Delaware State Police announced the indictment and arrest of two women for separate incidents of child deaths. A grand jury indicted the women on Monday.

Both have been arrested.

Valorie Handy was charged with murder by abuse or neglect, 1st degree for the death of a 10-month-old. The child attended her daycare in January of this year. Authorities have ruled the case a homicide.

Authorities say a a 9-1-1 call as made on January 28 from Handy's daycare. Officials say that preliminary investigations suggested that the 10-month-old was unresponsive after a worker tried to wake the child up from a nap.

The child was taken to the hospital where it was later pronounced dead.

Handy, 27, was taken into custody the following day.

The second woman arrested was Detoshia Spence, 23. Spence was indicted on Monday for murder by abuse of neglect, 1st degree. She also faces two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, two counts of child abuse and offensive touching connected to the death of her 3-year-old daughter.

Authorities responded to a call on the night of April 17. Paramedics were on the scene at a gome in Laurel, DE. The initial call reported CPR in progress.

Authorities ruled that the manner of death for the 3-year-old victim was a homicide.

Spence turned herself in to authorities on Wednesday.
