Officials: Milford Police Officer Shot, Attempted Murder Suspect Killed During Firefight Outside Rehoboth Motel
REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. (CBS/AP) -- A Milford police officer was shot and an attempted murder suspect from Reading was killed during a firefight outside of a motel in Rehoboth Beach. The officer was critically wounded Thursday night while working as part of a U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force.
Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings says the task force located the suspect who had fled from Pennsylvania and moved in to arrest him when he opened fire. The suspect was killed during an exchange of gunfire.
"Milford is a small town with a dedicated police force – like the rest of our state, the relationships are close. The attempt on this officer and his fellow officers' lives has only been public for a short time, but I know that his entire community is hurt, angry, and rooting hard for a swift recovery," Jennings said in a statement.
Milford Det. Timothy Maloney, a public information officer with the department, did not name the wounded officer.
Delaware State Police said there had been reports of shots fired coming from the area of the Econo Lodge on Coastal Highway on Thursday night.
Police say there is no threat to the public.
