Delaware River Waterfront Preliminary Design Plans Released

PHILADELPHIA (CBS)--Wondering what the future of the Delaware River Waterfront looks like? Preliminary plans have been released.
The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DRWC) is moving from the concept of transformation to the next stage.
"Unlocking the potential of the Delaware River Waterfront is an amazing opportunity being watched around the world."
Mary Margaret Jones is with Hargreaves Associates, which has waterfront design projects across the globe and they're set to work in Philadelphia. She gave a presentation to dozens of officials, business leaders, and members of the community on Tuesday, October 15.
It's all about connecting the city to the waterfront and spurring development, as is the mission of the DRWC's master plan for the Central Delaware River.
One of the ideas is a cap stretching over I-95 and Columbus Boulevard between Walnut and Chestnut Streets. It is designed to be a bridge of gardens and cafes leading to an amphitheater at the water's edge. Another idea is a new South Street Pedestrian Bridge.
"A bridge that doesn't feel like a chore. A bridge that feels like a destination, an amenity, an event even of itself."
Deputy Mayor for Economic Development Alan Greenberger said they are developing a funding plan now.
"It's a significant amount of money. We're doing some creative thinking about ways to finance it that we're not really ready to talk about yet. But, this is a huge step in that direction because what you have to do is build up momentum."
After the public comment period, a final development plan is expected in January.
