Delaware River Waterfront Corp. Looking For Design For Penn's Landing Park Project

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation is looking for design teams to submit proposals for a new project; the creation of the eight acre Penn's Landing Park that would connect part of Old City with the waterfront.
A grant from the William Penn Foundation will fund the design phase.
The park would run from Front Street to the waterfront, between Chestnut and Walnut.
Deputy mayor for economic development and planning Alan Greenberger, who's also on the DRWC board, says the site was specifically selected to make effective use of existing infrastructure.
"Chestnut Street Bridge, Walnut Street Bridge, and, between the two of them, about 60 percent of I-95 is already covered," Greenberger explains.
The presence of that infrastructure could make the project more cost effective, in the hundreds of millions ballpark.
"Nobody should kid themselves, that's a lot of money," he says.
But Greenberger says the park's value would go beyond mere esthetics.
"You put the public investment in place and that enables the private sector to see the value and become more interested," says Greenberger.
