Delaware River Port Community Planning Saturday Collections For 'Sandy' Victims
By Tony Hanson
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The memory of Hurricane Sandy might be fading for some of us, but for many families just north, along the coast, every day still brings new trauma.
The Delaware River port community is planning a donation drive on Saturday to try to help ease the suffering.
Kurt Ferry of Greenwich Terminals says volunteers from private- and public-sector port businesses and agencies will set up at three locations -- in Philadelphia; Gloucester, NJ; and Wilmington, Del. -- for donations.
They are primarily and preferably seeking nonperishable food items, but also clothing, cleaning supplies, toiletries, and pet supplies.
"Some of these families have been decimated to where they have nothing but the clothes on their backs," Ferry tells KYW Newsradio. "They are now living in shelters, and the shelters obviously are stressed as far as the resources being able to get to them in a timely manner. And they are just asking for all the basic needs that we would need for families to basically function from day to day."
Ferry says they'll have six 40-foot shipping containers -- two at each location -- and their goal is to fill them.
More information, including collection times and locations, is in a press release (.doc format).
