Delaware Dredge Project Upsets Officials in New Jersey
New Jersey officials are claiming that the Army Corps of Engineers violated a federal court order last month, dumping dredge spoils from a section of the Delaware River in the Garden State.
KYW's David Madden reports currently the deepening project is confined to waters within the state of Delaware with promises from the corps that project waste would be handled safely and confined to Delaware.
South Jersey Congressman Rob Andrews is an opponent of the dredge project:
"They're zero for two. They did dump spoils in New Jersey and there was a dam break and a leak as a result of it."
The issue is the site in question has a border with water in Delaware but land in the Garden State. Thought is being given to take these complaints to Judge Sue Robinson in Wilmington overseeing phase one of the dredging project.
There are separate legal proceedings pending in Trenton Federal Court regarding work scheduled in New Jersey itself. The Army Corps referred calls to the Justice Department and they declined comment.
