Delaware County Woman Reminds Us Of The True Meaning Of Memorial Day
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The meaning of this holiday weekend is often lost to the sand and the surf -- or to the sizzle of the barbecue. For more than a decade, a Delaware County native has been trying to change all that.
Carmella LaSpada was dismayed when she asked a group of kids what Memorial Day means for them. "They looked at each other and said 'that's the day the pool opens,'" LaSpada says.
So, the founder of No Greater Love -- a non-profit that honors fallen US troops and helps their families -- came up with an idea: "Wherever you are at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day, stop what you're doing, think about those who died and make a promise to live a good life for those who gave their lives for us to live in freedom."
She says Major League Baseball has been on board from the get-go -- all games stop when the clock strikes three across the country, as Americans remember those who made it possible to have a national pastime -- those for whom we keep the flag flying high.
