MEDIA, Pa (CBS) -- A 37-year-old Delaware County man has been arrested and charged in the beating death of his 6-year-old nephew in early November.
Prosecutors say Paul Adams Junior apparently got very angry when he returned to his Wallingford home from a karate class with his nephew Friday night and the child began getting ready for bed. District Attorney Jack Whelan says Adams delivered a fatal, 45-minute belt-lashing when the child, identified as Tyreece Charlow, wouldn't listen or follow directions.
"The defendant set a timer and told the child that he has to do this or suffer the ramifications," says Whelan, "and then went and got a belt and started violently beating this child with the belt."
The child fell asleep, but Whelan says when Adams went to check on him he was unresponsive.
The boy was rushed to Crozer Chester Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death is blunt force trauma.
Whelan says authorities confiscated two belts, one was broken.
He says Adams had informal custody of the child.
