Dealing With Pedophilia
By Dr. Brian McDonough
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Frankly, it has been depressing and quite upsetting for most people. The news about allegations of pedophilia by a former coach at Penn State and a Hall of Fame sports writer are disturbing. But there is one thing that has come out of these highly publicized cases that is important.
Victims are beginning to speak up. They realize that they are not alone and they are also noticing that those who speak up are being treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.
One of the greatest problems associated with this issue is the fact that victims are not just hurt at the time of the assault but they are meant to feel like they are somehow responsible and can carry the guilt for life.
That is why, despite the horrors of these acts that have been publicized, it is allowing those who have been holding back to reach out and get help. For those of you with children, make sure you tell them that if anyone treats or touches them inappropriately to always feel that they can tell you.
