Two Dead In Schuylkill Expressway Crash
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Two people are dead after an early morning accident on the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76).
The crash happened around 1 a.m. Tuesday in the eastbound lanes of the expressway at the Conshohocken Curve.
Police say a motorist had left the scene of a previous accident on the ramp from the Blue Route to the eastbound Schuylkill Expressway and was walking in the middle of the highway when he was struck by a motorcycle. The impact threw the motorcyclist off his bike and authorities say he was lying in the road when he was hit by a white work van.
Both the pedestrian and the motorcyclist were pronounced dead at the scene.
State Police Corporal Gerard McShea says it's unclear why the man was walking in the traffic lanes of the expressway.
"We're doing some follow-up interviews, trying to figure out why he might have left the scene and why he may have been walking in the middle of the highway," McShea says, "but we do have multiple reports that he was walking in the lanes of traffic."
Police say no charges will be filed against the driver of the van.
The ages and names of the victims were not immediately released.
No one else was injured in the accident.
The crash caused the expressway to be shut down for nearly five hours, blocking eastbound traffic and backing up traffic along alternate routes as well.
