Deadline To File Your Taxes Just Hours Away
By Lynne Adkins
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - If you haven't filed your taxes yet you better hurry!
Midnight is the tax deadline for your Federal, Pennsylvania and New Jersey taxes and many taxpayers will be spending the day furiously trying to finish.
Jane Scaccetti, a CPA in Center city, says there are reasons people procrastinate:
"Sometimes there are additional pieces of information that you don't have, charitable donations that you haven't gotten all the letters or maybe even made your list," she said.
Scaccetti says if you just wont' finish by midnight, you need to file IRS form 4868 for an extension.
"It gives you until October 15th to file your tax returns, so that gives you sufficient time over the summer into the fall to get all the additional pieces needed," she said.
That's only a six-month delay in filing the paperwork. Any taxes owed must be paid today, or you'll end up paying fines, interest and penalties.
