Darren Daulton Diagnosed With Brain Tumors
PHILADELPHIA (AP/CBS) — Former All-Star catcher Darren Daulton has been diagnosed with two brain tumors and will undergo surgery next week.
Daulton, played 14½ of his 15 seasons for the Philadelphia Phillies.
A statement was released Thursday saying Daulton, after not feeling well the past two weeks, saw a doctor who made the discovery.
Daulton was a key part of the Phillies' NL championship team in 1993. He finished his career with the 1997 World Series champion Florida Marlins.
KYW's Ian Bush reports that "Dutch," as Daulton was known, will let doctors make the calls early next week, when he's scheduled for surgery.
"He was tough as nails. He played injured," recalls Larry Shenk, who was head of public relations for the Phillies during Daulton's 14 years on the team and is now in charge of alumni relations. "After every game he'd be in the trainer's room putting ice on both knees for about ten minutes. It was a ritual he had to so he could get behind the plate. He was a horse."
It's that work ethic that Shenk says puts Daulton ahead in the count now.
Dutch has a World Series ring, earned with the Marlins in 1997, and has a well-deserved spot on the Phillies' Wall of Fame.
