Darby, Pa. Man Charged With Using .380 Handgun to Escalate School Fight
UPPER DARBY, Pa. (CBS) - A Darby, Pa. man is being held in lieu of $150,000 bail for a shooting in Upper Darby this week that caused police to lock down an elementary school and a middle school.
Police say a confrontation started Tuesday, when two students from Upper Darby High School got into a fight. On Thursday, one of the students planned retaliation by bringing in a third person, 23-year-old Darius Kilbey of North Third Street in Upper Darby.
Upper Darby police superintendent Michael Chitwood says Kilbey brought a .380 semi-automatic handgun to the fight.
"Four shots were fired. There had been 50 or 60 people in the area. Fortunately, nobody got hurt," Chitwood said.
Police say the suspect will be charged with aggravated assault and several other crimes.
Chitwood says police shut down Bywood Elementary School and Beverly Hills Middle School for a time to ensure the safety of the students, and he says there is concern about an uptick in school violence in the area.
"We're willing to do our part, but the school will have to do its part to get the violence under control," Chitwood said. He says police have been to Upper Darby High School forty-five times in the past few months.
