Dad Of Local Olympian Going To Rio After Meeting GoFundMe Goal
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Competing in the Olympics seems like an impossible feat but Penn State alum Darrell Hill is headed to Rio to do just that.
But before the Track and Field athlete could make it there to compete in the Shot Put event, he had to clear one last major hurdle -- raising enough money so that his dad Ellis could join him.
Ellis, an Uber driver, shared Darrell's story with one of his customers who then set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise enough money so that the father could see his son compete.
In just three days the campaign raised $8,200, exceeding their goal of $7,500.
Penn Wood High, Darrell's alma mater, shared the good news on their Facebook page and wished their former student good luck.
The Men's Shot Put event takes place on August 18. Darrell turns 23 the day before.
