Cruise Ship Sails To Titanic Disaster Site To Mark 100th Anniversary
By David Madden
North Atlantic Ocean (CBS) - Sunday morning will be historic for history buffs worldwide as we will mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.
KYW reporter David Madden is aboard the Amazara Journey, a cruise ship out of New York headed to the site.
Seas have been somewhat rough on this cruise. But it's expected to be clear, calm and cold at the Titanic site when we stop to dine and hold an overnight memorial service for the 1,500 plus who perished a century ago.
Among those taking part is William Bateman of Lakeland, Florida whose grandfather, Robert, died on Titanic.
"We look forward to coming up here, saying a few prayers and bringing the family with us. There's four of us here."
Robert is buried in Florida.
Kristin Davis (photo) of Wilmington, Delaware is aboard with her stepmother, and calls this voyage "a dream in the making".
"It's going to be extremely moving for me just because of the human element of the Titanic. The tragedy and the survivors and the stories of the heroics. It's all going to come into fruition right at that moment."
Others have taken to donning period dress on board. Most are sharing stories - some real, some not. And all are looking forward to the overnight interdenominational service here on the pool deck.
