Crowds Flock To Jersey Shore For Memorial Day Weekend

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (CBS) -- Folks in Ocean City, New Jersey woke up to a warm sun and miles of pristine boardwalk and calm beaches on Monday.
"This is the nicest day of the weekend I think so might as well come to the beach!" said Brittany Solero from Royersford.
From the outside, Hurricane Sandy seems like a distant memory. The crowds are back and businesses are open and ready for visitors. There are still small reminders as the city rebuilds its shoreline, but the work isn't scaring off anyone this weekend.
"It's fun to watch everybody having a good time," said Bob Doody, "I have a funny saying 'it's fun to have fun!'"
And while many are enjoying the shoreline, those who gave the ultimate sacrifice are close to the hearts of many here on this Memorial Day, as we keep in mind our veterans and those currently serving.
"In memory of Pop Pop, who loved the finer things in life, boat rides, sunsets and summertime with family at the shore.." Phil Field read off a plaque that sits on a bench overlooking the boardwalk.
Those words were written by Field's wife - a tribute to Harry Wallace Welliver, Jr., her Grandfather. He was a World War II veteran who loved living in Ocean City. Every Memorial Day Field sits on this bench and honors his memory.
"I brought a flag along just to remember him and all the other veterans who served," he said.
The plaque goes on to read: "Some things cannot be measured, the grains of sand upon the beach, the depths of waves and sea, the glow of the stars in heaven, and the love of family.."
