Crews Working To Repair Water Main Break In Old City

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Philadelphia Water Department says water service is normal for everyone in Old City and Society Hill after Saturday's massive water main break at 3rd and Walnut, but the gigantic hole created remains. (see related story)
A crew of about a dozen water department employees operating heavy machinery is repairing the damage. A backhoe digs large chunks of concrete out of a hole about 20 feet long and 10 feet wide.
This all started as a leak, according to a water department spokesman. Crews pinpointed the source as a 36-inch joint.
As workers uncovered the joint to perform repairs, they were surprised by an old-faithful style eruption. Water shot into the air and rushed through historic cobblestone streets.
Amazingly, residents and businesses affected had water service fully restored about 90 minutes after the pipe burst. If anyone is experiencing low water pressure, call the PWD at 215-685-6300.
Roads in the area of 3rd and Walnut are still closed and could be for at least a few days.
