One Dead, Three Injured In Nicetown Crash
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- One person was killed and three others were injured when a car slammed into a telephone poll in North Philadelphia.
The accident happened around 10:30 p.m. Monday near Wissahickon and Roberts Avenues in the Nicetown section of the city.
Police say the driver of a 2013 Ford had taken the Roberts Avenue exit from northbound Route 1 when she lost control of the vehicle, struck a telephone poll, and then dropped off a 20-foot embankment.
The driver, a 23-year-old woman, suffered severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Three passengers inside the vehicle were all injured. A 24-year-old man was taken to Einstein Medical Center in critical condition. A second 24-year-old man and a 24-year-old pregnant woman were both taken to Temple University Hospital in stable condition and were expected to be okay.
Police found alcohol inside the vehicle and say they do believe that speed and alcohol were possible contributors to the crash.
The accident forced the closure of the Roberts Avenue off ramp.
PECO crews were on scene repairing downed wires from the broken poll.
The accident was under investigation.
