Crews Clean Up Vacant Lot In Camden, Officials Say Homeless Won't Be Evicted
CAMDEN N.J. (CBS) - State crews have been cleaning-up a trash-strewn lot just off of Admiral Wilson Boulevard in Camden. Officials say there's no imminent effort to evict the homeless people who are camped nearby.
On Wednesday, a bulldozer moved several truckloads of litter and debris off of the state-owned property on Linden Street right next to where several dozen homeless people have been camped since last year.
Does that mean the homeless are being moved next? Not necessarily, says state transportation department spokesman Joe Dee.
"Whenever there are homeless individuals residing on DOT property, we do not go in until the proper county or city agencies that help homeless people with relocation- until they go through and address the needs of these individuals."
City and county officials say there's an ongoing effort to reach out to the homeless, but that the bulldozer cleanup does not signal an imminent eviction.
