Namesake Bridge Between Hometowns Honors Couple's Love
By Paul Burton, WBZ-TV
BOSTON (CBS Local) -- Work crews put the finishing touches in July on a bridge project that's taken on a life of its own.
The bridge that helped bring a young couple together is now going to keep their memory alive forever by connecting their Massachusetts hometowns.
Lynn Goodchild and Shawn Nassaney were just starting their lives together, when they died in the 9/11 attacks.
"He was from Pawtucket and she was from Attleboro it just cements the two cities together with their names," says Ellen Goodchild.
Watch the WBZ-TV report:
Ellen Goodchild talked to CBSBoston.com station WBZ-TV about her daughter Lynn and her boyfriend Shawn Nassaney who both were deeply in love and died together in the 9/11 attacks.
Now the County Street bridge which has been under construction for five years, will be called the Goodchild and Nassaney 9/11 Remembrance Bridge.
The Ilkowitz live right next door to the bridge and came up with the name.
George Ilkowitz says, "I think its important that there's something named for the two families considering they lost their lives in terrorist attack."
"It was a real tragedy and really hit home for us in Attleboro," says State Rep. George Ross. "Just to see the courage of both of those families, I don't know how I would react if I lost a daughter like that."
Since Lynn was from Attleboro and Shawn was from Pawtucket, the bridge will be dedicated in both of their names.
"Because the bridge is from Attleboro to Pawtucket we just thought it was a good idea," says Kathy Ilkowitz. "It's perfect."
