Council Finishing Up Proposal To Overhaul Philadelphia Zoning Code
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia is inching closer to a sweeping overhaul of its woefully out-of-date zoning code.
City Council on Tuesday wrapped up a second day of hearings on a proposal to rewrite the zoning code top to bottom. Councilman Darrell Clarke is pleased.
"I believe that we are more than 80-85 percent there."
Councilman Bill Green says the issues on which there still is no agreement can be tabled, for now. For example, the issue of allowing development on parkland.
"Putting that aside until next year will not affect development," Green says. "There is no major development affected to the parks, so why should we argue over that now? Let's just pass the code."
Council has three weeks to send suggestions back to the Zoning Code Commission, and then is to cast a final vote by year's end.
